Catalytic Converter Recycling in India

Not sure what your catalytic converters are worth? We buy whole units and ceramic from collectors across India, priced per kg on assayed metal content.

How is a catalytic converter priced in India?

There is no fixed rate per kilogram. Any buyer who quotes you one before testing your material is guessing – usually in their own favour.

Four things decide your payout

Platinum, palladium and rhodium trade daily. Rhodium sits in the smallest quantity of the three, yet usually accounts for the largest share of the value.

The share of that metal value your buyer passes on to you. Ask for the figure – a buyer who will not state it is not being straight with you.

How many grams of each metal sit in every kilogram of ceramic. This varies by vehicle and by emission generation.

How much material you actually have once it is out of the steel casing.

The first two you can check yourself. The last two come only from testing the material.

Catalytic converter recycling process

1. Consulting

Before you ship, we help you work out whether it pays to send as you collect or to consolidate a larger lot first. Sorting matters more than volume: separating petrol ceramic from DPF material usually improves the result more than adding weight does.

2. Cargo delivery

We arrange export from the main Indian container ports and prepare the documentation that PGM-bearing waste requires. Because the material is classified as hazardous waste, the paperwork is not optional - getting it right before the container moves avoids costly delays at the port.

3. Processing

Whole units are inspected and decanned, and the ceramic honeycomb is milled to a uniform fine fraction. Already-decanned material goes straight to milling. Nothing is valued until it has been through this stage, because intact honeycomb cannot be sampled reliably.

4. Sampling

The full lot is blended into a homogeneous mass before a representative sample is drawn. A sealed reference sample is kept, so if you ever disagree with a result the same material can be re-tested rather than argued about.

5. Assaying

Platinum, palladium and rhodium content is determined by XRF and confirmed by ICP. These are the industry standard methods, and the figure they produce - not an estimate from a photograph - is what your settlement is based on.

6. Settlement

Once content is known, we agree the terms and settle. Where a lot takes time to process, an advance against it can be arranged so your working capital is not tied up for the full cycle.

Timeline runs from arrival at our facility. Sea freight from India is additional - we confirm the full schedule with you before the container leaves.

Send photos of your material and we will tell you what happens next

Why Choose Recohub in India?

  • Settled on measured content. Every lot is assayed by XRF and ICP, and the result is what you are paid on.
  • A retained reference sample. We keep a sealed sample of your material, so a disagreement can be re-tested rather than argued.
  • Documented sourcing. Spent converters are regulated hazardous waste in India. We ask where material came from, and we do not buy units that cannot be accounted for.
  • ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certified. Buying only from documented sources.

Is it legal to sell catalytic converter scrap in India?

Yes - provided the material moves through the formal channel.

  • It is hazardous waste. Spent catalytic converters are classified under the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016. Handling, storage and transfer are all regulated.
  • Facilities need authorisation. Any facility dealing with catalytic converter material must hold authorisation from the Central Pollution Control Board or the relevant State Pollution Control Board.
  • The formal network is uneven. More than 80 Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities existed by early 2026, but they cluster in the Delhi-NCR, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu corridors. Collectors elsewhere often have no formal outlet nearby.

Why paperwork protects the seller:

That gap is a problem for honest sellers, because it is exactly where undocumented buyers step in. Material without paperwork attracts lower offers, and a buyer who does not ask where the units came from is not doing you a favour – they are pricing in their own risk and passing it to you.

Recohub buys only from documented sources. We ask for proof of origin on every lot, and we will not buy units that cannot be accounted for.

FAQ

1. What is a catalytic converter and why is it valuable?

A catalytic converter sits in a vehicle’s exhaust and turns harmful gases into less harmful ones. It does this using a ceramic honeycomb coated with precious metals. Those metals are the reason a used converter is worth money: they can be recovered and reused, and they are far scarcer than the steel casing around them.

Three platinum group metals do the work: platinum, palladium and rhodium. Petrol converters lean towards palladium and rhodium, while diesel systems use proportionally more platinum. The steel casing and the ceramic itself carry almost no value — the catalytic converter metals worth recovering all sit in the thin coating on the honeycomb.

Only a few grams in total, and the split varies by vehicle, engine type and emission generation. Rhodium is present in the smallest quantity of the three, yet it frequently accounts for the largest share of the value. Because the range between vehicles is so wide, the only reliable figure comes from assaying the ceramic rather than estimating from the outside.

There is no single rate. What dealers call the catalytic converter material price is simply the measured metal content of the ceramic, valued at current platinum, palladium and rhodium markets, less the payable percentage and processing costs. Because content varies by vehicle and by emission generation, the catalytic converter scrap price in India moves with both the metal markets and the material itself — which is why any firm quote given before testing is guesswork. Send photos and an approximate weight and we will tell you what your material looks like.

We buy the removed ceramic, which many Indian dealers call mitti, as well as whole uncut converters, from collectors and dismantlers across the country. Send photos of the material with an approximate weight over WhatsApp and we will come back to you with the next steps.

There is no standard catalytic converter price in India, because value depends almost entirely on what the ceramic contains rather than on how the unit looks or what it weighs. Two converters of similar size from different vehicles can settle several times apart. A buyer who quotes you a firm figure before testing the material is protecting themselves against that variation, and the cost of that protection comes out of your payment.

Yes, when it moves through the formal channel. Spent converters are classified as hazardous waste under the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016, and facilities handling them need authorisation from the Central Pollution Control Board or the relevant State Pollution Control Board. We buy only from documented sources and ask where material came from.

A catalytic converter changes exhaust gases chemically; a diesel particulate filter traps soot and burns it off. Both sit in the exhaust line and both contain ceramic, so they are easy to confuse. They are not worth the same — diesel systems lean towards platinum with little rhodium. Keep them in separate lots, because mixing DPF ceramic into a petrol batch lowers the assay for everything in it.

Both. Removed ceramic ships more efficiently and moves through testing faster, so if you already decan, send the material. If you do not, send whole uncut units and we handle the decanning. In either case settlement is based on measured metal content, not on a count of pieces.

India has more than 80 registered vehicle scrapping facilities, but they cluster in a handful of corridors, and most catalytic converter buyers in India work only inside those same corridors. That leaves collectors elsewhere without a formal outlet nearby. Get in touch regardless of where you are based. Consolidation with other lots can usually be arranged, and we will tell you honestly if the volume does not yet justify a shipment.
