Market drivers

What Moves the Platinum Price

The main factors behind changes in the platinum price, and why the market reacts to them.

01

Concentrated supply

Supply is concentrated: most mined platinum comes from South Africa, followed by Russia and Zimbabwe, so mine output, power supply and labour issues there can move the price.

02

Broad demand

Demand comes from vehicle catalytic converters, jewellery, industrial uses such as chemical and glass production, and investment.

03

Recycling

Recycled platinum from used catalytic converters and jewellery is an important secondary source of supply.

04

US dollar

Like other metals priced in US dollars, platinum is also affected by changes in the strength of the dollar.

Catalytic converters

Platinum in Catalytic Converters

Platinum is used in catalytic converters to oxidise carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons. It is especially common in diesel vehicles, while petrol vehicles often rely more on palladium together with rhodium.

How much platinum a converter contains depends on the vehicle, engine and emission standard. That is why a recycled converter is valued from its measured metal content rather than from the platinum price alone.

Methodology

How These Prices Are Calculated

Source

Prices come from an independent third-party market data provider. All values are calculated from US dollar prices and exchange rates published in the same update.

Updates

We check for new prices every hour. “Updated” shows the time of our last successful update in UTC. If updates fail for more than three hours, prices are marked as delayed.

Change

The change compares the latest price with the previous daily value (previous close) in the selected currency, using the exchange rate of each day.

Units

One troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams and one kilogram equals 1,000 grams. Precious metals are quoted in troy ounces, which are heavier than ordinary ounces (28.35 grams).

History

Charts and tables use one value per day. Days without data are left blank and are never estimated.

Indicative prices

Prices are for information only. Dealer, refiner and recycler prices include premiums, fees and processing terms, so they will differ.

Technician in protective equipment handling catalyst material during converter processing

Converter material is sampled and analysed to measure its platinum, palladium and rhodium content.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is platinum per gram today?

The current platinum price per gram is shown at the top of this page and in the price table. Use the unit switch to change between troy ounce, gram and kilogram, and the currency selector to see the price in euros, pounds or UAE dirhams.

How much is platinum per ounce?

The current platinum price per troy ounce is shown at the top of this page. Precious metals are quoted in troy ounces: one troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams, about 10% more than an ordinary ounce of 28.35 grams.

What is platinum used for?

Platinum is used in vehicle catalytic converters, jewellery, catalysts for chemical and petroleum refining, glass production, electronics and medical devices, and as an investment metal.

Is the platinum rate in Dubai the same as the world price?

Market reference prices are global. In UAE dirhams the platinum price follows the US dollar price closely because the dirham is pegged to the dollar. Retail prices in shops include premiums and charges and are higher.

Does the platinum price show what a catalytic converter is worth?

No. A converter's value depends on how much platinum, palladium and rhodium it actually contains, measured by sampling and analysis, and on processing and refining terms. Contact us for an individual assessment.
